International Safety Management Certification
The purpose of the ISM code is to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation for ships and for pollution prevention. The Code became applicable on 1 July 1998 and it is applicable for all oceangoing ships over 500 GT on 1 July 2002.
The ISM Code requires owners and operators to establish a Safety Management System (SMS) adopting its objectives and covering the entire Company’s operations and ships. The SMS enables your Company to identify areas of improvement in safety practices and pollution prevention measures.
Upon successful audit, LHR issues the following certificates:
- Document of Compliance (DOC) (document issued to a Company, which complies with the requirements of the ISM Code)
- Safety Management Certificate (SMC) (document issued to a ship, which signifies that, the Company and its shipboard management operates in accordance with the approved SMS)
